ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
- The English language requirements for our courses are provided on individual course pages as minimum IELTS scores, however we accept many other tests and qualifications.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements
- Applicants from New Zealand who have completed the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 3) with an overall grade of Merit (M) or Excellence (E) can be considered for direct entry to an undergraduate course at Birkbeck.
- Applicants with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or A-levels will be considered for direct admission to our undergraduate degree programmes. IB requirements range from 28 to 33, depending on the course.
- A-level AAA = 144 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer: Excellent
- A-level AAB = 136 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer: Excellent
- A-level ABB = 128 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer: Excellent
- A-level BBB = 120 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer: Merit
- A-level BBC = 112 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer: Merit
- A-level BCC = 104 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer: Merit
- A-level CCC = 96 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer: Achieved.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements
- Applicants from New Zealand who have completed a Bachelor’s Honours degree from a recognised HE institution can be considered for admission onto the Master’s degree
- For programmes requiring a UK 2:1: a minimum degree classification of 2:1, or a final grade of B+ or equivalent
- For programmes requiring a UK 2:2: a minimum degree classification of 2:2, or a final grade of B- or equivalent.
- Applicants from New Zealand who have completed a Bachelor's degree from a recognised HE institution with very high grades can be considered for Master’s admission at the discretion of the department - this is equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s (Ordinary) degree.
- Degree classification:
- First Class (alternative name: A/A+; English translation or equivalent: 1st)
- Second Class (Upper Division)/2.1 (alternative name: B+/A-; English translation or equivalent: 2:1)
- Second Class (Lower Division)/2.2 (alternative name: C+; English translation or equivalent: 2:2).

Research degrees Entry Requirements
- The usual entrance requirement for a research degree is a Master’s degree from a recognised university; schools may accept students with high grades in the undergraduate degree.
- Applicants are strongly urged to contact potential supervisors within the department before submitting a research application.
